The Mandalorian may be the latest piece of Star Wars content that fans are currently hyped for, but many are also looking ahead to the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series. Not much is known about it, but we do know that it will see Ewan McGregor reprise his fan-favorite role as the titular Jedi. The actor hasn’t said too much in the way of plot details, yet he does seem to be very excited about reprising his famous role. One aspect of the process that he recently recalled was trying on his robes again, and the story is pretty sweet.
The Obi-Wan series is scheduled to begin shooting in the spring of 2021 but, ahead of that, Ewan McGregor had to undergo a costume test. This, of course, led to a nice reunion with his signature Jedi costume:
It was funny walking on set because it was a lot of the Mandalorian crew and I walked on, and for me, it was a big moment. I walked into the dressing room and there were my beige cloaks and my belts and boots and it was like, 'Oh my God.’ It was my old costume. It was amazing.
McGregor couldn’t help but geek out about the moment on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and who could blame him? The last time the actor actually had to don the robes for a project was in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and that certainly seems to be the case here.
Of course, looks aren’t everything, and McGregor is certainly aware of this. With the new series, he’s hoping to add new layers to the established character. One of the ways he’s doing this is drawing from the performance of the actor who originated the role, Alec Guinness. McGregor acknowledges that he’s now somewhat closer in age to Guinness, and he believes his challenge is to meet the late actor’s performance somewhere in the middle.
Aside from his performance, there were also be a number of major behind-the-scenes changes for McGregor. This time around he’ll be working with Mandalorian director Deborah Chow. Additionally, the series will utilize technology from its fellow Disney+ show, including the enhanced cameras and blue and green screens. The series is going to increase the workload for Chow, McGregor and their colleagues, but the director says she’s ready to take on the challenge.
Disney+’s Obi-Wan series will pick up eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and will focus on Kenobi’s time in isolation on Tatooine. His primary goal was to watch over the young Luke Skywalker, but you can bet that Ewan McGregor and Deborah Chow are going to throw a few obstacles his way when the show arrives.
