Why The Masked Dancer Champion's Big Fall Could Have Been A Lot Worse

The Masked Dancer Season 1 has come to an end, and audiences may have been shocked to see winner Gabby Douglas edged out not one but two professionally trained dancers. It was quite a turnaround for the Olympic gymnast, who suffered quite a brutal fall earlier in the show.

After winning, Gabby Douglas spoke to EW about the fall that happened during her practice of the first routine and how it could've been a lot worse. She also shared a bit about the injury and the bumps and bruises she got from the scary drop onto the stage.

I was so fortunate for Cotton Candy's outfit, because she has a huge, fluffy skirt, and also her head shielded me, and it softened the fall. But I was okay, I was fine. I only got a bruised chin and a bruised knee. What happened was, the ring was spinning really fast, and it's interesting how your perception of gravity is just thrown off a little bit. My left shoulder got too much outside of the ring, and that's literally what happened and why I fell.

It sounds like the ring fall was a simple mistake that honestly could've been a lot worse than what it actually was. Luckily the Cotton Candy outfit was just as fluffy as it looked watching The Masked Dancer, and she was able to not only continue in the competition but eventually go on and win the whole thing.

And while Gabby Douglas is likely no stranger to falls given her career in gymnastics, tumbling from a ring up in the air face-first into a stage isn't something one can necessarily prepare for. Douglas is lucky she didn't get more seriously injured, and perhaps her incident will lead The Masked Dancer to have more safety protocols in place should it return for another season.

Weirdly enough, Gabby Douglas is not the first person in the Masked franchise to have a freak accident occur while in rehearsals. In Season 2 of The Masked Singer, Michelle Williams got quite a shock when a platform she was standing on as The Butterfly short-circuited and sent an electrical charge through her suit. Both The Masked Singer and The Masked Dancer have been fortunate that neither celebrity was gravely injured in the process, and we can only hope things remain that way in the future.

Fox has not revealed whether or not The Masked Dancer will return for Season 2. Would you like to see it return? Share your thoughts in our poll, and remember some of the high points of this season, like Craig Robinson being an awesome host.
