NBC’s medical drama, New Amsterdam, has been aroller coaster this season. A few weeks ago, one of the original characters resigned from New Amsterdam Medical Center, and now Anupam Kher, who portrayed Dr. Vijay Kapoor, is sharing a heartfelt message with fans following his shocking exit.
While the news that Anupam Kher has exited ran around the Internet already. I'm about to get into specific spoilers, so skip this bit if you aren't fully caught up. In the April 13 episode, “The Legend of Howie Cournemeyer,” Dr. Kapoor shocked his colleagues and fans watching when he put in his resignation from the Neurology department. Now, the actor has made an official statement on his Instagram about his love for New Amsterdam. He also thanked fans for their continued support and wishes for his wife, who has been diagnosed with cancer. He noted:
Earlier this month, Anupam Kher confirmed his wife’s cancer diagnosis, and this message seems to confirm it's the reason why the actor left the medical drama. Kher had been on New Amsterdam since the show’s beginning, which made it hard for the fans to say goodbye. But after reading Kher’s statement, it looks like it wasn’t easy for him either and New Amsterdam will always have a place in his heart.
Dr. Kapoor had been through a lot this season. The character was recovering from COVID-19 and heart surgery, so the storylines were a perfect way to kill him off. However, having him resign makes it so that it’s possible he could return in a future season, even if it’s just a one-off. But even if there is a possibility Anupam Kher could make a return, it’s not rushed as he deserves to be with his wife. New Amsterdam Medical -- and the fans of the show -- can wait. After all, there is no one that will ever replace him.
Anupam Kher and his wife, Kirron, have all of the love and support of the New Amsterdam fandom and beyond. While we will miss seeing Dr. Kapoor around the halls of New Amsterdam Medical Center, it’s not hard to tell how much Kher has enjoyed his time on the NBC drama. It’s going to be a long road for them ahead and we wish them nothing but good health and well-wishes as they continue on this real-life medical journey in the coming months.
