NBC has picked up another new project, this time a legal drama that’s set to star Angela Bassett. Vanishing Point landed at the Peacock network today with a script commitment with penalty. Bassett is on not only set to star but also executive produce the project, which comes from Source Code writer Ben Ripley.

Bassett would play an attorney who has little sympathy for others and pursues her brilliant career without mercy. When she finds out she has a serious illness her life is thrown in chaos, she decides to make it public and bring on a young, also female, attorney as an assistant. The two women are the center of what is being described as a character-driven drama according to Deadline. Most legal dramas can be described that way, and the concept of a powerful woman (or man for that matter) who finds their world turned upside down by a health crisis and makes major changes is far from original. There may be nuances to this project that aren’t coming across in the vague description, but so far I don’t see anything really promising here.

Bassett did a pilot for Fox last year, a spy drama, and she also spent some time on ER in its fifteenth season. She will also be playing the role of Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, Jr., for the Lifetime movie Betty and Coretta opposite Mary J. Blige. She will also be on the big screen in Olympus Has Fallen; the movie is currently filming for a 2014 release.
