Damon Wayans Jr. Confirmed For New Girl Season 3 Arc

ABC’s Happy Endings may be over, but lead Damon Wayans Jr. has already signed on to a new project. After a few days of rumors, the actor is officially joining Fox’s New Girl to reprise a role that he initially played in the pilot. Just a few days ago, the man was in talks with the series to reprise the role, but now it seems that Wayans Jr.’s return will definitely happen this fall.

New Girl is currently gearing up for its third season on Fox. As reported by THR, in the new season, Wayans Jr. will reprise his role as Coach, a funny dude who really, really likes to work out. Currently, there are no details explaining in what capacity the character will return to the series, but as TV Line reported a few days ago, the arc will include at least four episodes. Now is the time for a happy dance.

Wayans Jr.’s return to New Girl is very much tied to his role on Happy Endings. ABC’s quirky comedy was on the cancellation bubble for years and two seasons ago, Wayans Jr. apparently assumed the show was likely to get cancelled and signed on for the New Girl pilot playing Coach, one of Jess’ roommates who bonds with his new roomie in the first episode. Unfortunately, Happy Endings eventually was picked up that year and Coach was forced to move out. In the interim, Winston (Lamorne Morris), moved in and has been a major part of the series throughout its run.

Now, that Happy Endings is cancelled, Wayans Jr. has a pretty clear schedule, which means the actor could be a part of the series for much longer, depending on what the writers are able to create for the character of Coach. No doubt audiences are excited about the character’s return, but I hope that doesn’t mean that Winston will get a lesser role in the upcoming season. Morris was the dude who stuck around for the last few seasons, throwing terrible pranks and otherwise being an integral member of the cast. He may have not been a part of the pilot, but he’s definitely done great things on the show and I hope his character’s wit and common sense still stand out against Wayans Jr.’s character’s outgoing personality, although it definitely sucks that people are this excited about Wayans Jr.’s return when he was only on the show for one episode and Morris has been on the show ever since. Still, it will be interesting to see what the heck Coach has been up to for the last couple of years.

Fox’s New Girl returns to the schedule on Tuesday, September 17 at 9 p.m. ET.
