When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a game show host. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be on a game show. Now I mostly can’t hide my disdain for game shows. I blame Deal Or No Deal. That stupid program embodied everything wrong with most current formats. It was all luck-based and luck-based game shows are infinitely worse than their counterparts that require skills. If I find out someone won thirty grand on Jeopardy, I instantly respect them more. If I find out they won two hundred thousand dollars on Deal Or No Deal, my opinion doesn’t change in the slightest. There’s something wrong with that, but maybe this new NBC effort will get back to the mental challenges I liked best.
According to Deadline, NBC has ordered eight episodes of an Israeli import they’re currently titling Still Standing. A big hit over there, it pits one contestant against ten rivals in a series of trivia questions. I’ve never seen the original, but based on the plot description, it sounds like a scaled back version of 1 vs 100. No word if Bob Saget will be involved, but I’ll go ahead and cross my fingers.
Look for this to pop up as a midseason replacement somewhere down the road.
Enthusiastic about Clue, case-of-the-week mysteries, the NBA and cookies at Disney World. Less enthusiastic about the pricing structure of cable, loud noises and Tuesdays.
