If there’s one thing I can say about Parks and Recreation, NBC’s comedy gets some interesting and oddball people to sign on for cameo appearances. In the past, names as varied as Joe Biden, John McCain, and Barbara Boxer have each popped up as themselves in the comedy, and now yet another political titan has found himself coerced into appearing on the show. Newt Gingrich will cameo on an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation, and the story behind his appearance is a little wacky.

Adam Scott’s character on the show, Ben, has a big bachelor party coming up, and when men in Indiana want to class things up a bit, they will usually head to The St. Elmo Steak House. Several members of cast, including Scott, Rob Lowe, Chris Pratt, and Aziz Ansari, headed to Indianapolis to shoot parts of the upcoming bachelor-themed episode. It was in Indy that a chance encounter sparked the awesome Gingrich cameo.

According to The Indianapolis Star, while the group was shooting scenes inside The St. Elmo Steakhouse, Gingrich, who was in town for a meeting, tried to pop in for lunch. Seeing an opportunity, co-creator Mike Schur prompty wrote the politician into the script, alongside other cameo appearances from Pacers players Roy Hibbert and Miles Plumlee. That probably makes for one of the best chance encounters I’ve ever heard of that has benefited a TV series. It's even more spectacular that Gingrich was game to jump in.

NBC’s Parks and Recreation airs on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. ET.
