It’s a mark of true comedic genius when one can sell a gag without saying a single word, and Jack Black merely represents the latest in a long and distinguished line of comedians able to perform such a feat. As it turns out, all he needs to get laughs from an audience is a bowl of marshmallows. The actor recently appeared on television in South Korea to take part in the “Marshmallow Challenge,” and as you can probably assume, hilarity quickly ensued as soon as the challenge began. Check out the clip below to see for yourself.
In the above video, Black appears on the Korean game show Infinite Challenge. Going up against fellow competitor Kwanghee, the two begin a challenge during which they must insert as many marshmallows as they physically can into their mouths one at a time. Think the bar scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, only with marshmallows and way more humor. Slowly but surely, the two men pack their mouths full of the delicious puffs and exchange intense glares at one another.
By the end of the competition, Jack Black lets out a slight laugh, which causes Kwanghee to burst out laughing and eject all of the marshmallows from his mouth. Not content with merely winning the challenge, Black goes on to shove even more marshmallows into his gullet before spitting them out onto the stage.
It probably goes without saying, but we don’t recommend that you try this challenge at home; leave it to the professionals and the comedians of the world. The video serves as a prime example of the fact that Black can sell a comedic bit without needing to say anything. Through a few glances and some guttural noises, the actor is able to endlessly entertain audiences across a major language barrier. While some comedians require thorough set-ups for their jokes, all Black has to do is move his eyebrows a certain way and it’s comedy gold. He may have made a career out of voiceover work in recent years with the Kung Fu Panda series, but there’s ample evidence that he would have been just as successful of a comedian during the silent era among men like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.
If you haven’t checked out the hilarious video above yet, I completely encourage you to do so. You can currently catch Jack Black’s voiceover work in Kung Fu Panda 3, which is in theaters now.
