Dark Knight Destroys Blu-Ray Sales Records

For those of you who have somehow managed to miss nearly every voice on the internet simultaneously screaming “Dark Knight Dark Knight Dark Knight!” for the past few days, you should probably be aware that a little movie called The Dark Knight hit DVD and Blu-Ray this week. And since it’s The Dark Knight it shattered sales records.

According to Video Business, the movie ripped apart all previous Blu-Ray sales records to set a new high water mark for the format. TDK sold an amazing 600,000 copies on Blu-Ray in just one day, it’s first day on shelves, December 9th. Warner Home Video feels confident they’ll break a million Blu-Ray discs sold by the time this weekend roles around.

Just to put this achievement in perspective, the previous record holder was Iron Man, which only sold 260,000 Blu-Ray units in its first day and 500,000 in its first week. The Dark Knight in one day did more than the previous Blu-Ray champ did in an entire week.

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s been a spike in Blu-Ray player sales to correspond with the release of TDK. For a lot of people, this is going to be the movie that finally pushes them over the edge, out of the DVD realm and into the world of Blu-Ray. If Dark Knight can’t convince you to make the switch, then it’s a safe bet that nothing will.

The film is doing nearly as well in regular DVD sales. In traditional DVD TDK sold a whopping 3 million on its first day. It may not catch Iron Man there, since Iron Man holds the DVD record at 7.2 million sold in a week. Still, that’s a massive number even if it seems Blu-Ray is the place to be for Batman fans.
