GTA V Release Date Announcement Next Week, Says Analyst
Update: Rockstar has announced a September release date for the game.
Take-Two Interactive may announce the release date for Grand Theft Auto V next week. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter says that the date may be revealed during the company's fiscal 2013 Q3 report on February 5th.
Pachter says that the "elusive" release date has been frustrating to Take-Two's shareholders. Take-Two once projected that the game would launch between March 2012 and March 2013. However, this August they conceded that the game wouldn't make that release window. Rockstar Games, subsidiary of Take-Two, has since announced a spring launch for the open-world crime game. They haven't narrowed that estimate down at all, though.
"Investor confidence appears shaken by repeated, unexpected, and unjustified swings in profit and loss. If Rockstar is ready to confide in Take-Two management, we may learn the launch date next week," said Pachter.
Pachter added that we should expect GTA V to arrive in May. That seems plausible. Rockstar does seem to be fond of that month. Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption were all May releases as well.
Grand Theft Auto is arguably Take-Two's biggest franchise these days. GTA IV has sold over 25 million copies since its 2008 release and won numerous Game of the Year awards. GTA V could be just as big of a hit. Given the franchise's importance to Take-Two, I would think they'd at least make some mention of GTA V during their Q3 report. Hopefully they provide some specifics, too.
While I'd be perfectly content with them announcing a release date for GTA V, I'm sort of hoping they mention the rumored PC version of the game as well. There have been small hints that Rockstar is developing the game for the PC but they've yet to confirm whether or not that's true.
