Hardware: Shipbreakers Brings Next-Gen Planetary Scavenging To PC
One of the sub-genres in gaming that we don't get very often is scavenging games. They're difficult to make given the logistics of all the items required to scavenge and craft things, but when done right they usually have long tail-ends and a dedicated niche community. Well, Blackbird Interactive is trying their hand at the 3D RTS scavenging sub-genre with their upcoming title, Hardware: Shipbreakers.
Gametrailers posted the new trailer for the upcoming title, sporting a first-hand look at the game in cinematic fashion. Now, one of the things that really sets this game apart from the typical RTS is that it's all about scavenging large scale, open environments to fix, upgrade and enhance your arsenal. There's a bit of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. meets Homeworld vibe going on and I'm definitely digging it.
The trailer above – while presented in cinematic tone – seems to feature hints at what the gameplay will be like and that's a very promising thing. Hardware could be a slick conversion of atmospheric aesthetics combined with regional, fast-paced 3D RTS gameplay. It could really open up doors for the way eSports handles the cinematic portrayal of the RTS genre.
My only reservation for the game is that it's a free-to-play title and, as history has shown us, just because a game is free-to-play and sports great looking graphics doesn't automatically mean it will survive, just like Black Prophecy for example.
