If you haven’t worn your thumbs out on every other Dynasty/Orochi
Warriors game then maybe you can reddened your palms some more with Koei’s
upcoming button-masher, Warriors Orochi 2. Featuring a slew of characters to choose
from, a re-invented versus mode, and more disposable bad guys than the most violent
Schwarzenegger and Stallone movies combined.
The story follows the attempted revival of the evil Orochi, and it’s up to players to stop the group
behind the revival and finally put Orochi to rest, for good. In the story mode players will pick a
team to take on countless enemies, and exchange teammates mid-battle to switch up tactics, or let
fellow teammates recharge their health. A new triple-musou attack has been added that allows for
a team attack, and there’s also a desperation tag-team assist feature in case one of the player’s
characters are injured too badly.
Gameplay in Warriors Orochi 2 – for those who may be completely unfamiliar with
Koei’s Dynasty Warriors franchise – is a complete button mashing, hack-and-slash fest.
One repetitive combo after another executed on endless hordes of mind-numbed enemies is
pretty much what you can expect from the adventure modes in WO 2. There looks to be
only one saving grace for this game, and that is with the reinstated one-on-one bouts that most
Tekken fans should find fun.
As of course, there are many Dynasty/Orochi Warriors fans out there who can’t get
enough of the legendary heroes of the old; those of the three kingdoms. So for the gamers out
there who love repetitive gameplay you’ll get plenty of it with a huge selection of 90 different
characters to play. Like previous iterations in the series, minor tweaks and additions have been
made to some of the character’s and their specials/weapons. So the game should be more
“balanced” this time around. Although, if I must say so myself, balance was never the
problem in previous Warriors games...it was the repetitive gameplay. Anyway,
each character will have various costumes to choose from, weapons to unlock and items to earn.
Newly playable characters in this game total 13, two of which come from older Dynasty
Warriors games, namely Fu Xi and Nu Wa.
Some of the new games modes – or rather, revised game modes – include versus challenges that
range from Steeple Chase, in which players must race each other to a designated area, or
Competitive Mode, in which players vie for the most kills. There’s also the Tag Team
Elimination that – as mentioned earlier – plays out a lot like Tekken Tag Tournament.
Last but not least is the Survival Mode, where the player is confronted with wave-after-wave of
enemy opponents.
Warriors Orochi 2 will be widely available on September 21st for the Xbox 360 and
PlayStation 2. Be sure to stay tuned in with Blend
Games for all the latest in video game news and information.
