Tearaway Unfolded Hints At Summer Release

Assuming that one of Media Molecule’s former employees is correct in a recent social media snafu, PlayStation 4 owners could be looking to play Tearaway Unfolded sometime this summer.

Keeping a tight lid on information like release dates can be a tricky business, especially when something as simple as a seemingly harmless Twitter comment about a person’s new job can let the cat out of the bag. That’s exactly what happened over the weekend when former Media Molecule employee Kenneth Young took to social media to let fans know where he would be heading now that he’s left the company.

Destructoid stumbled upon Mr. Young’s comments on Twitter and quickly grab a screencap of the two-part update. Dates can always change and release windows are frequently being pushed around but, at the moment, it looks like upcoming PS4 exclusive Tearaway Unfolded might arrive sooner rather than later.

“Sad to announce that I am leaving @mediamolecule,” reads the tweet. “But excited to announce that my first client as a #Gameaudio contractor will be @mediamolecule!”

Formerly the studio’s head of audio, Young will now be working for himself, bouncing around from developer to developer whenever his services are needed. It’s the next part of the tweet, however, that warrants a healthy “Doh!” on the part of Young.

“I’ll be working with my friends there until we ship #TearawayUnfoleded this summer. Then I’m going to have a rest,” he said.

So, there you have it. It looks like the latest iteration of the wildly imaginative papercraft adventure game, Tearaway could help make that summer drought a lot less lame.

Tearaway Unfolded was announced last year as a remake of the PlayStation Vita game, Tearaway. To this day, I hold Tearaway to be one of the best gaming experiences on the portable platform, taking advantage of the Vita’s various unique input methods to craft a brilliant game about discovery and living life for the journey. Coming from the folks who made LittleBigPlanet, it should come as no surprise that the title is utterly overflowing with original ideas and moments that will slap a smile on your face. Honestly, I can’t fathom why more developers haven’t taken advantage of what the Vita offers, now that MM has shown us just how well it can be pulled off.

While the original Tearaway was pretty Vita-specific in regards to design, what little we’ve seen of Unfolded so far looks like the team is making some interesting choices to work around the shift to a home console, as well as taking advantage of the PS4’s unique features like the light at the front of the controller. Check it out…
