It’s important to remember that the upcoming The Incredible Hulk is not a sequel to Ang Lee’s recent Hulk movie. It’s a redux of sorts – a new vision. Never mind the story picks up almost literally where Lee’s film left off. Never mind casting of actors and actresses that look similar to Eric Bana and Jennifer Connolly. It’s a reimagining of the franchise, dammit! Now that becomes clear with the latest casting news about the movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, William Hurt has signed on to be a part of The Incredible Hulk. This is yet another amazing name in a cast list that’s starting to rival Batman Begins in star power. Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, and now William Hurt. According to press, Hurt will play General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, father to Betty Ross (Tyler) and a man consumed with hunting down the Hulk.
As much as I love William Hurt, this is a bizarre choice for casting. Sam Elliot played the General in Lee’s version of Hulk and was near perfect for the comic book character. So if Elliot was near perfect, you can easily see how Hurt is an odd choice. The two are practically at opposite ends of the character actor spectrum. This is definitely taking the character, and possibly part of the movie, in a new direction.
The Incredible Hulk is slated for release in 2008.
