LEGO Batman May Have Found Its Commissioner Gordon, And It's Totally Not Who You Were Expecting

The second-most-anticipated Batman movie, the one that will be animated and made of Lego bricks, has been putting together a cast that would make any movie jealous. The list of stars is amazing, and includes some of the biggest names in comedy. We have our Batman & Robin as well as Batgirl, the Joker and Alfred. What we didn’t have until now was a Commissioner Gordon. This one is what we call "thinking outside the box," and is either brilliant or terrifying. Warner Brothers has reportedly signed Mariah Carey for the role. No, really.

UPDATE: THR is now going on the record to claim that while Mariah Carey IS joining the cast ofthe Lego Batman movie, she is NOT playing Commissioner Gordon. The trade says Carey will play the mayor of Gotham, though we're now waiting to hear something from the studio until we can officially confirm. Stay tuned.

From earlier: Most of the cast looks great, and is playing to type. Will Arnett and Michael Cera as the Dynamic Duo, Ralph Fiennes is Alfred, Zach Galifianakis is The Joker, and Rosario Dawson has been cast as Batgirl. Yet, this report is about as far away from type as we could possibly try to get. Don’t get us wrong, casting Carey as Gordon sounds hilarious, we just never saw it coming. It’s not clear from Deadline’s report how Carey’s casting will inform the character. Will the commissioner actually be a woman in this version? It would be a new and unique way to play it, which could be entertaining on its own. In the previous Lego video games that included Batman, the commissioner was a fairly traditional version. Although hearing Carey’s voice coming out of a character like that could be the funniest thing about this movie so far.

Mariah Carey’s film career has covered a wide variety of performances over the years, from her starring role in the bomb Glitter to her recent roles in stronger films like Precious and Lee Daniels’ The Butler. This would be Carey’s first straight voice-acting role, though the woman has made her primary living with her voice, so we don’t expect speaking rather than singing to cause her much trouble. Unless Commissioner Gordon will also be singing. The potential for this movie is getting better all the time.

Most of the key roles for the film are likely cast now, unless the movie ends up with even more of Batman’s rogues gallery making an appearance. Mariah Carey’s casting now opens up the possibilities of any future roles to potentially be literally anybody now. We’re hoping Judi Dench gets cast as The Riddler next. You know you want to see that.
