This is actually pretty exciting. I mean we run a lot of stories that I try to make sound exciting (it’s my job), but this is one that actually impressed me. Footage from the upcoming adaptation of His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass has just leaked out online. I’m not talking crappy, lame footage that link to and then try to make it sound like it’s not depressingly boring, I’m talking about pretty cool stuff, especially for a movie that’s so far off.
The footage is a teaser trailer designed to be shown to cooperate muckity-mucks. Toy companies mostly, this is New Line trying to get manufacturers interested in making useless pieces of plastic based on their films, which they can then turn around and sell to children and nerds to increase their hefty profit margin. Well, I suspect this bit of footage might do the job.
It’s pretty rough, but it really gives you an idea of what to expect from the movie. It’s no Lord of the Rings, but it certainly doesn’t look like an Eragon sized stinker either. Watch for yourself. Click play below:

I agree with Kristopher's comment- It is a very good "summing-up" about what His Dark Materials is about. I hope the filmmakers manage to capture what Philip Pullman intended the books to be onto the big screen and that they do not let us down. The daemons look quite interesting, but there is still a lot of work left to do. I wait for "The Golden Compass" in great anticipation...
I JUST finished this series this week, and they are truly great books. Its extremely difficult to see how a child could even begin to comprehend the depth of this story. They are about love and growing up and friendship and bonds all full of extremely complex emotions... in fact the theme of growing up and the changes that we go through that is presented in the books is the very thing that would keep a child under, say 16 from understanding. reading this series then going back to Golden Compass really gives a sense that you really had no idea what you were in for when you started, the scope of the story expands incredibly. Very intricate, very fun, extremely sad and heartwrenching, but amazing and wonderful at the same time. Read the books before seeing the movie.
And as for the trailer, they look like they are on the right track so far.
