Pacific Rim Featurette Drops Audiences Inside Del Toro's Robots

These skyscraper-sized monsters tearing their way through Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim aren’t going to fight themselves, people. It’s why we need equally massive robot suits piloted by normal-sized human beings to prevent the creatures emerging from our seas from destroying what’s left of our beautiful planet. And if you want to see how Del Toro and his team created these robots, check out the feature that was just posted on Yahoo Movies.

In his voiceover, Del Toro promises that the action in Rim will rival the imaginations we had when we were 11-year-olds. Only he has a budget most studios wouldn’t entrust to a child, which is part of the reason why we’re so excited to see what he does in the blockbuster. The clip goes on to give more backstory to Rim, which imagines a not-so-distant future where monsters known as Kaiju come from the ocean and attack. To counter them, we create Jaegers – and it’s into these piloted metallic warriors that this new feature takes us.

It’s always interesting to see how the sausage is made on a movie as massive as Pacific Rim, and yet part of me wants to stay protected from the massive thrills we know that Del Toro is packing into this summer blockbuster. I mean, we’ve already seen a Jaeger use a gigantic ship as a bat when fighting a creature. Don’t you wish you saw that for the very first time on a massive movie screen?

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. It will be in theaters on July 12.
