Star Wars: Rogue One Shows Off Costumes And Weapons In New Pics, See Them Now

One element of the Star Wars movies that goes a long way to selling the world created on screen is the costume design. They’re at once familiar, yet specific to this fictional world, and every time out of the gate, a ton of work and preparation goes into the incredibly detailed outfits we take for granted. If the creative teams are doing their jobs, we hardly notice their work. A number of costumes for the next adventure in that far, far away galaxy, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, are going public this weekend at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, and pictures of them are starting to hit the airwaves.

This photo from the toy fair shows off a number of the costumes that we first saw in the one official photo from Rogue One, but it gives us a better look at them. With more direct lighting, not as obscured by other characters, and on full display, we can see more of the details.

We know Rogue One is set in the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and these costumes look very much like they could have been lifted right out of the original trilogy. The have that lived-in feel so many of the early costumes had.

This outfit is the one worn by Diego Luna’s character, who, at one point, was rumored to be Luke Skywalker’s friend Biggs Darklighter. We’ll have to wait and see on that—it seems doubtful, but given how heavily Star Wars: The Force Awakens leaned on the previous films, it’s possible—but wherever they are, it’s likely to be cold as all hell. Though there are some differences, this is very similar in appearance to Han Solo’s attire on the ice planet Hoth. And that blaster he has looks rather sturdy.

We don’t get much of a glimpse of it in the cast photo, but, at least according to this costume, Let the Bullets Fly star Jiang Wen is going to be packing some serious heat in Rogue One. We still don’t know the identity of these characters—the plot revolves around a group of Rebels stealing the plans for the original Death Star—though these costumes scream bounty hunter to me. Or at least some kind of outliers, possibly outlaws recruited for the task. Maybe they’re undercover, but these folks don’t look like your average Rebels.

Felicity Jones, who may be named Lyra Erso, is the star of the Rogue One show, and this is a closer view of the outfit she wears in the cast photo—it also looks like it’s cleaner. With the low-slung blaster, jaunty scarf, and leather jacket—and with her posture in the photo—she has some serious swagger going on, almost a devil-may-care, Han Solo vibe.

Jones’ character is another mystery, though there have been a number of rumors. One said she was Boba Fett’s daughter—maybe she’s trying to atone for the sins of her father—though the latest indicates that she may be related to someone else. A report made the rounds recently that she is the daughter of Mads Mikkelsen’s character, and that he’s a scientist who helps design the Death Star. Purely in it for the science, when he realizes what he’s created, he may turn to the Rebels in an attempt to right his wrong.

We’ll see how all of these possibilities pan out, as well as get a look at these costumes in action, when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16.
