El Cantante is the dramatic-biography of Puerto Rican salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe. The film follows Lavoe’s (Anthony) passionate relationship with Puchi (Lopez) and his skyrocket to international fame. But even when he has it all, Lavoe is unable to escape the allure of drugs and his personal pain.

Because making movies with the men in her life has done such wonderful things for her career in the past (Gigli, Jersey Girl), Jennifer Lopez’s next movie has her co-starring with Marc Anthony. Say what you want about Ben Affleck, but at least he was an actor rather than a once popular musician.

  1. Betty Says:

Ben Affleck still has trouble drawing people to see his movies. He's not a good actor. I've seen Marc Anthony act and he stays true to the character he is playing. I believe "El Cantante" will be a success for both Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez. Just wait and see.

  1. chinito Says:

Hector Lavoe's story is an important one and needs to be told. I look forward to seeing this movie.

  1. gabriela Says:

Marc Anthony has tackled different character roles, with some very good performances. Film examples : "The Big Night," "Bringing out the Dead," "The Substitute." and "Man on Fire." In the nineties, he received high praise for his performance in Paul Simon's play "The CapeMan," which had a short run on Broadway.

Marc is well-respected in the Latino community as a salsa singer. He's considered an excellent choice to play legendary Hector Lavoe in "El Cantante". Credit Jennifer Lopez for that. Lavoe's widow first contacted J.Lo about making the bioflic around 2002. Lopez considered Anthony the only choice for the role. They were no longer dating by then and he was into his first marriage. They reportedly met about ten years ago.

Lopez and Affleck were not dating until sometime after meeting on the set of Gigli. Ben has an Oscar for co-writing a screenplay with Matt Damon in 1998, not for a performance as an actor.

  1. tobey Says:

Are you kidding me? Ben Affleck is a joke, he can't act, sing or draw people to see him. You truly made me laugh with that one. As for Marc, there is no comparision, he can act, sing, entertain and best of all he has Jen. I am looking so forward to this move, "El Cantante" and I am sure it will deliver. I always knew Jen would wake up from Affleck and get out while she could. After the breakup, her career started to boom again, while Afflecks is still dangling.....hahaha. You are one funny critic.

  1. Mila Says:

I'm really looking forward to see this movie, the trailer is pretty good, and i really think that Marc Anthony is a good actor i've only seen him in Briging down the dead and Man on fire and he did great in both those movies.

  1. Oscar Says:

I believe this film will be a great way for Jennifer Lopez to redeam herself. Marc Anthony isn't a "once popular" musician as you put it. He still is a popular singer. Maybe you have never listened to his latin albums or even noticed that he has won Grammy's for them.

  1. Christian Says:

I think this is going to be a really good fim. The film already have oscar buzz so im looking forward to see this movie.

  1. Gretchen Says:

I'm just so excited that there will be a movie about Hector Lavoe. His music is amazing!!!!! I saw Marc Anthony in the musical the Cape Man and I have no doubt he will give a good performance in the movie.

  1. EFRA Says:

I can't wait to watch this movie!!! As a kid growing up listening to Hector's music and having an understanding on how the music use to reflect his life I think this movie will help all those who understand and loved the salsa that Hector brought to our ears to see in some way how he dealt with his life. And i'm glad that Mark Anthony is playing this role and Jen will play the perfect Newyorican wife that Hector had in that era. My advise to all those Salsa lover is to support this movie 100%.

  1. Richard Says:

I thought "El Cantante" was awful. I was expecting more from this movie. But it turned to be another vanity project for JLo and her husband. As bad as "Gigli" was it was not as near disaster this movie is.

  1. Virgin Says:

This is an opportunistic atempt to ride on LaVoes Legacy by two mediocre talents. Marc Anthony has a different accent in every scene. He is a pathetically poor actor. No matter what he does he is always just Marc.

Jlo has charisma but her acting has always left much to be desired. An Oscar buzz? What planet do you live on? Not an Earth Oscar! The movie is edited like a High School movie. Nor did they respect the music. Willie Colón, the man who to a large extent made LaVoe what the star that he became; is merely a background figure. That is a gross revision of history.

The Cape man, Marcs Broad foray is Broadway historic biggest losing flop. That is quite an accomplishment.
That's how bad Cape Man was.

Marc does a terrible imitation of LaVoe on the sound track. Giving us something that is neither true to LaVoe or even Marc himself.

This mobie was ill-conceived; just not planned well

All of these planted posts will not save this movie. It should go directly down the toilet and not pass Go.

  1. Chico Chulo Says:

I grew up listening hector lavoe music. Growing up in queens thats what everyone listened to. My father who is peruvian and my mother who is puerto rican always talked about hector as if he was jesus christ himself. which comes to my next conclusion. I think that Jlo is *beep* up this movie so bad. Knowing her rep she will do anything to get approval from the hispanic community. As every one knows alot of hispanics dont really like Jlo. So i think she was doing this movie for money and her big ego because i don't really want to see a mans biopic turn to another gilli. The most *beep* up thing about this is that she 's in every scene. Which im pretty sure the real puchi was a stay at home mom while hector *beep* other woman. Movies today don't have no meaning at all. they are just out to make a quick dollar. thats why i kinda watch more indie films because its more artistic. Marc was a good choice but i rather watch benicio del toro be hector because he's a better actor and Jlo just sucks as an actress i rather see penelope cruz as puchi. I feel offended as a hispanic watching Jlo selling herself out just to get recognition in the hispanic community! they should have made this movie in spanish so the rest of the world can read the subtitles not the other way around. Which is *beep* up because 3/4 of the hispanics in this country only speak spanish. it's just a disrespect to that generation. It's not like hector spoke in english and they translated it in spanish so latin america can understand. He people came first. Jlo just doesn't give a *beep*

  1. Y que? Says:

I can't wait to see this movie! I grew up listening to Lavoe and have most of his music. Especially the FANIA years. I have read his bio as well and it is great that Jennifer's company picked up this project to tell this story. As far as the lead acting roles , first Marc. Big fan of his music. His acting is really good. This is his first major role in film, so we will see. I heard the sound track , I expected more . Like Willie Colon in it (especially)!!and other FANIA artists Lavoe worked with in the past .
Jennifer Lopez as Puchi? Oh hell yeah! On the real though, Those of us critics know on a judging panel . Up for lead roles for Puchi; I say Lauren Velez (OZ) Judy Velez (Scrubs) or even La India maybe. For Hector; Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) that would have been very interesting.

  1. Luis Says:

The fact that major artists from this period are not saying anything about this film should tell you that it's strictly an opportunistic piece by a couple who are self-absorbed. Hopefully, though, it'll bring success to Willie Colon who truly deserves the accolades for all he has endured. I would have done this movie instead as a period piece about the time, music and the men/women that influenced the music. As much as I admire Hector, I hate the fact that the whole drug abuse issue is thrown in here and some will glamorize that, ala Scarface. Que viva la musica, que viva la gente and remember, "usa la conciencia Latino, no la dejes que se te duerma".

  1. jaime Says:

He was the best I ever saw. those who never heard of him should see this movie.

  1. sidonie Says:

This is what I think: even without the sound on I can see that Mark Anthony is five times the actor Jennifer Lopez is, though her visual wattage is Marilyn-like in music videos when she isn't speaking. Once Jen speaks, the illusion is shattered. She needs a voice coach to quell her high-pitched nasality. Ouch!

  1. Coquito Says:

I find it funny that people think J-lo is to much in the movie. Puchi wrote the script. It was taken from Hector's wifes point of view. How can she NOT be in every scene? If she wasn't there she wouldn't know what happened and wouldn't be able to talk about it... Does that benefit J-lo? Who cares? I hope it does! How can you have a story given from puchi's point of view without puchi???

And if anyone wants to know what happened to cap man, it was protested by irish people who thought it was a bad idea to make a play about a hispanic murderer. They didn't want to address the issues that surrounded the murder. So we have Irish killing cap man before it comes out and now hispanics who want to kill El Cantante before it comes out.

Some people are expecting a Puerto Rican version of Ray. I'm going to be happy if it's a good music video. To expect more from the first movie of "Nuyorican Productions" is expecting too much I think. At the very least hispanics should cut them some slack.

  1. karen Says:

the movie was great and the music had everyone out of there seats. it was nice to see the other side. the real part of his life. A lot of the time movies focus only on the good and never show the ugly. eveyone should go and see the movie and rate it them selfs. don't go by what everyone has to say. El Cantante was great.....

  1. keptsmooth Says:

    was great

  1. Niño Says:

Ok, this movie was soooo good, I loved every second, Marc is indeed a great actor, whatever he's great at everything he does, and I felt J.lo all the way, she got the whole accent down, she was Puchi.
People say they focused too much on the drug issue, well to be honest, we already know he was a great impact to the latin music, I mean, he was amazing, is great they were able to also portray the fact that he was human like all of us, how he was fighting his demons, its 2007 no one lives a peachy life, and that's why they need to keep things real.
Hopefully J.lo and Marc do benefit from it.
Now I can't wait for the version La India is producing, called "The Singer" YAYYYYY!!!!!!! Lets give it up for J.lo for her first time producing a great bio film, go J.lo go J.lo

  1. LefPapi Says:

In short, this movie does not portray Hector accurately. If someone's never heard of Hector, they would be like WTF should we care about this guy?? drug addict from the very first scene, irresponsible, went through "pain" yet he had a good time all throughout!

The movie should have been called "PUCHI"
