Everyone’s had a painful parting of the ways with a romantic partner. We pick up the pieces and move on. But for one New York guy, it’s not going to be so easy. When he breaks up with his girlfriend, he discovers his ex is actually the reluctant superhero, G-Girl. A scorned woman, she unleashes her super powers to humiliate and torment him. MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND stars Uma Thurman as Jenny Johnson, aka G-Girl and Luke Wilson as Matt Saunders, her beleaguered boyfriend. Anna Faris is Hannah, Matt's co-worker. Rainn Wilson is Vaughn, Matt's best friend and Eddie Izzard is Professor Bedlam, G-Girl’s arch nemesis.
Uma Thurman came close to playing a superhero in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, but now she’s throwing on a cape in earnest for Ivan Reitman’s My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
What makes this superhero movie any different from all the other ones we’ve been inundated with? This time, the superhero genre is being applied to relationships. It’s a superhero movie for women, as evidenced by the flowery pink writing on the poster and the trailer’s tendency towards the lauding of girl power. Most women don’t really care that Superman can punch through brick walls, they’re more interested in whether or not he’ll kiss Lois. My Super Ex-Girlfiend trims out all the action movie fat and turns the entire thing into an exercise in relationship exploration.
Estrogen pressed relationship movies aren’t exactly what Ex-Girlfriend director Ivan Reitman is known for though, after all he’s the director of Ghost Busters. So relax guys, expect that touchy feely stuff to be tempered with ectoplasm as Uma’s super hero girlfriend from hell tortures Luke Wilson.
After a string of misses like Evolution and Six Days Seven Nights, Reitman could use a hit. For the sake of whatever is left of his fading reputation, let’s hope this one is it.

Pardon my french..but who the hell is going to spend $10.75 to watch a guy get tortured needlessly for two hours. The movie premise is flawed and if anything says that superheroes just like ordinary people should take the high road and move on. I saw in the trailer where she throws a great white shark into his apartment barely missing him. That's not a superhero when you threaten someones life and use your powers against an average guy you don't happen like because he dumped. You become a super villainess at that point.
Would men or women viewers pay to see Spider-Man who is a victim of romantic angst with Mary Jane..would they pay to see him throw her off a building or torment her ?
No because it doesn't come off as funny it comes as absurd and then a tad creepy.
Women may watch this revenge stomp on your ex fest but after a while its gets old..really old. Which means that after a while into watching the movie Uma is going to come off like a stalker or a jerk or somewhere in between. And the empathy will be on the guy. And if you are striving for comedy that's NOT what you want to happen.
I actually saw an early screening of this movie and it actually is very funny. I was laughing the whole time. Its not her torturing him the whole time at all. And yes, Uma does come off as a stalker, but shes supposed to be. Her character is a bit....crazy, mentally. She comes off as eccentric, but it works. I wouldnt go bashing the movie so badly when all youve seen is a 30 second preview, because you may end up looking a bit foolish.
Its interesting hearing C. Bronx finds it creepy that Uma may come off as a stalker. I wonder if he's seen Superman Returns? Talk about creepy, stalking superheroes! Sheesh!
I also saw a preview and I have to say that the trailers do not do this film justice. Men and women alike were laughing hysterically and enjoying themselves. I personally loved the movie and it wasn't a "chick flick" like people assume it is. It has a really great script, actors with great comedic timing and pretty good special effects. I can't say they are superb because only part of them were done when I saw the screening.
Both genders will find amusing things that they are ashamed of in their gender. We've all had one of "those" relationships. So to go into it thinking it is going male bash is lame. This movie also has all of the super hero elements in it. It is truly a great Ivan Reitman flick. I just wish they made a better trailer. Had I not seen the screening, I would be one of those doubters who saves my 10.75. I am glad for the stroke of luck.
