The Bones Final Season Trailer Is Thrilling And Emotional

Bones is returning for one final season on Fox. While the long-running series was kept off of Fox's fall schedule, it will be returning, finally, at midseason, and this week the network gave us the first look at Bones Season 12. The trailer is more thrilling and emotional than you might expect from a series that is basically a procedural with a few longer arcs each season. You can take a first look at Season 12, below.

Most of the footage in this trailer is stuff we've seen so far. The end of last season saw the return of Zack Addy, the former Jeffersonian intern who eventually helped out a serial killer named Gormogon. The character popped up in the Season 11 finale, and actor Eric Millegan revealed he will be on Bones when the show returns for Season 12. Flashes of Brennan and Booth's courtship also play out onscreen. There's the couple at their wedding, the couple with a baby, presumably Christine but possibly Hank. We see them hug their way through several dangerous moments all while we get a voiceover from Booth about what is coming. He says:

We're not done here, I'm going to get my family back.

Bones is not a show that is fond of putting together unhappy endings, but there have been times that the show has been bittersweet. Hodgins and Angela lost all of their money to one of Pelant's schemes, and the former spent much of last season dealing with paralysis. Characters like Dr. Lance Sweets have been killed off the series and other characters have dealt with hardships, including Hodgins' aforementioned paralysis but also squint Wendell, who dealt with bone cancer. The show's characters have had ups and downs over the years, but this final season was renewed by Fox and conceptualized by the creative team in order to give fans some closure.

Fox's Dana Walden had this to say about a final season some months back:

We don't want this show limping to an ending. We want to send it out with style and class and the way it wants to be wrapped up...

I'm presuming this means that Brennan and Booth will be living happily ever after, but in the interim, Bones has already promised a wedding and more for its 12th and final season. And clearly this Zack Addy plotline isn't going away anytime soon.

Luckily, we finally don't have too much longer to wait to see how this particular story wraps up. The final season of Bones will hit the schedule on Tuesday, January 3 at 9 p.m. ET, only on Fox.
