With so many singing competitions on TV these days it’s hard to know which ones are worth watching. Each is attempting to add a twist that will make it stand out from the pack and reach the level of hits like Idol and The Voice. The CW’s new entry, The Next, has a few interesting twists – but for contestants it may be the prize that makes it truly the chance of a lifetime.
The winner of The Next will earn a recording contract with Atlantic Records, which is a pretty big deal considering these people will start as small-time local singers. The Next features four big-name stars from different areas of the music industry. Gloria Estefan, Nelly, Joe Jonas and John Rich will be the four celebrities who visit six different cities in search of a new star. Each celebrity will grab a local singer and have 72 hours to prepare them for a singing competition in front of their friends, family and others from their home city. The winner of each local competition will go on to the finals to be filmed in Los Angeles. One of the twists this singing competition offers will be the chance for viewers to vote for one of the singers left behind to get to the finals in spite of not winning locally. Fans will vote for those who didn’t win, and the one with the most votes will also go to the finals.
The last three episodes will pit the finalists against each other and narrow it down to one, who will walk away with the Atlantic recording deal. They’ll also join one of the four celebrities on the show as an opening act .
The Next premieres August 16th and wraps up October 4th, giving CW viewers something new while they wait for the premieres of the network’s returning series that are all set for October premieres. Assuming viewers have any interest in yet another singing competition.
