Syfy's 20th Anniversary Special Airs Tonight, Featuring Amanda Tapping, Jamie Bamber, Sam Witwer And Others
Twenty years ago, the Sci-Fi Channel debuted on U.S. cable television, and since then, the channel has offered us some of the more imaginative programming on television, whether it fall under actual science fiction, fantasy, reality or paranormal. Or wrestling. Don't forget wrestling! Syfy's celebrating its 20th Anniversary on television with a special that's set to air tonight and will feature the stars of some of its beloved shows.
People might complain that Syfy doesn't air enough sci-fi (or that not enough people tune in to appreciate what sci-fi the channel airs), but I'm hopeful the upcoming Defiance will follow in the path of shows like Battlestar Galactica in not only being a must-watch science fiction series on Syfy, but also finding an audience. Whether or not either is the case remains to be seen. In the meantime, as a fan of shows like Being Human and Face Off, and of other programming that's aired on the cable channel over the course of its existence, I think it's fair to say there's nothing quite like Syfy on cable.
Tonight (December 10) at 9:00 p.m., Syfy will air the 20th Anniversary Special, which features a number of stars from the channel's past and present series as they look back at the history of the channel.
Amanda Tapping (Stargate, Sanctuary), Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica) and Sam Witwer (Being Human, BSG) are among the stars featured in the trailer above, and there are even more featured in the video below.
It looks like this'll be a great special for anyone with a fondness of Sci-Fi/Syfy over the course of the channel's two decades of existence. Technically, Sci-Fi launched in September 24, 1992, but I'm thinking the special will get a bit more attention airing now when things are slowing down for TV in anticipation of the winter hiatus.
