DVD Pick Of The Week: Mirrors - Unrated

This week is dominated by releases that are coming out just to be timely. You have Swing Vote capitalizing on the current political consciousness with the new President being sworn in in just over a week. There’s the original My Bloody Valentine coming out just in time for the 3-D remake/sequel. And then you have Mirrors.

I’ve grown a little more fond of Alexandre Aja’s work as his career has progressed. I couldn’t stand Haute Tension, which had major story problems many people seemed to have overlooked. His remake of The Hills Had Eyes was a lot more compelling and had quite a bite. With Mirrors Aja goes a little Japanese with his style, appealing to he current cultural interest in Japanese horror, and even tries some psychological thrill to his movie. Mostly, it’s just an excuse to get bloody though.

I was actually quite impressed with the boldness of how Mirrors ends. Without spoiling it, it’s about as non-Holllywoodized an ending as a movie like this could get, so I’m very curious to see what this unrated cut holds with its alternate ending. Wouldn’t it be cool to see the rejected ending was turned down because of the exact opposite of most of the alternate endings we see - it was too mainstream?

Mirrors is far from being an excellent movie, but it is a perfect guilty pleasure type picture. Since I haven’t seen the more artistic releases this week (like Appaloosa), I’m picking the movie I know to be fun, and a better thrill than a lot of the current theatrical offerings.
