The World Ends With You, the cult classic DS RPG from Square Enix, could be getting a sequel. Tetsuya Nomura, one of the artists on the game, suggested in a new interview that Square will revisit the series.
"Regarding The World Ends With You, I can't say anything at present... (laughs). But there probably is something," Nomura told Nintendo Dream (via Andriasang).
Nomura recently worked on Kingdom Hearts 3D. The 3DS RPG actually features five characters from World Ends: Neku, Joshua, Shiki, Beat and Rhyme. It's the first time that character that didn't originate in Final Fantasy or Disney appear in a KH game. These cameos suggest that the game is quite close to Square Enix's heart even if they don't have immediate plans for a sequel.
World Ends With You takes place in the Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo. Players take on the role of Neku, an anti-social youth. The story starts with his mysterious death. In order to return to life, he must enter a competition known as The Game. If he doesn't win, he'll be erased from existence.
Perhaps the best feature of the game was its Stride Cross Battle System. Both Neku and his partner battle enemies simultaneously but on different screens. Coordinating the two characters' attacks and keeping them both of harm's way was tough but also really gratifying.
World Ends With You may never be as important a franchise as KH, Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest is but the strong reviews certainly warrant a sequel. I think the series' premise and gameplay is distinct enough that it could have legs.
