When Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington get together, you can be sure the end result is going to be a visceral experience. When you add Ethan Hawke, you think what you’re going to get could be something special. Add five more men into the equation and there's really no telling what we’re in for, but it certainly looks like fun. Check out the first trailer for the remake of The Magnificent Seven below.
The town of Rose Creek is desperate. The town is under the control of a gang that doesn’t mind killing people to keep their grip in place. The town is so desperate that they turn to an outlaw, played by Denzel Washington, for help. They’re willing to pay for the work, and so Denzel takes the job, and goes looking for men to help him out. He finds Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier. Seven men against the world. Shouldn’t be a problem. The highlight has to be Vincent D’Onofrio looking about as far from the Kingpin as it’s possible to be.
The film is, a remake of the 1960 classic that starred Yul Brynner in the Denzel Washington role and Steve McQueen in the part that looks to be closest to that of Chris Pratt. The original Magnificent Seven was itself a western adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai from 1954. It’s a classic story about a group of less than savory characters who become heroes when they choose to fight for something other than themselves for the first time in their lives.
Antoine Fuqua directed Denzel Washington to an Academy Award for Training Day and the two teamed again in 2014 for The Equalizer. The Magnificent Seven may be their most ambitious project to date. The original is over 50 years old, which means it may be a film that’s only known by name to many movie fans, but it’s highly regarded by those who have seen it. It was one of the highlights of the western genre in an era where making them was still common. Today the western is a movie that we tend to only see occasionally. They’re not the box office draw that they once were, but the star power and the title may be enough to make this one big.
