The year 2011 is going to be a vital one for Marvel Studios – it will be the year that we all find out if this whole “Avenger” thing is going to work. I am, of course, referring to the release of both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. With Iron Man and Hulk taken care of, they are the last two superheroes that will have solo films before the big ensemble movie is released in 2012. But much like the time before Iron Man, mainstream audiences really have no idea what to expect.
Arriving first will be Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the Norse God comic, which will drop in theaters on May 6, 2011. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and many, many more, the film tells the story of Thor, the arrogant and hammer-wielding Norse God of Thunder, who is cast down to Earth from Asgard by his father, Odin, to learn humility. While banished, however, his brother, Loki, the evil God of Mischief, takes control of Asgard and plots to destroy Earth.
The trailer for the film has been posted by Yahoo! and you can either watch it there in HD or below. After you watch continue downwards for my analysis.
As reported yesterday, much of the trailer is from the footage that leaked online from this year’s Comic Con back in July. Just as I enjoyed that footage, I enjoyed this trailer as well. Some of the marketing is obviously going to be dedicated to exposition and explanation, but I think they’ve done a solid job of mixing it in with the action (I like the voice-over by Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson blended with Thor’s decimation of the S.H.I.E.L.D guards. I also love how both the Frost Giants and The Destroyer look - both should make for some seriously great action sequences.
Being a life-long comic book nerd, I’m actually more curious what you non-nerds think of it (and, of course, my fellow nerds as well). Leave your thoughts in the comments, and, as always, for more on Thor, head on over to our Blend Film Database.
