Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters Ratchets Up Gore For Red-Band Clip

Part of me still isn’t 100% convinced that the movie Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters exists and actually plans to open on Jan. 25. I mean, we’ve been hearing about the hybrid horror-comedy for a long time now. And there were a few promo images that ran online several months ago. But it still sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit birthed shortly after Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opened (and shortly closed) last summer.

But Paramount and MGM seem dead set on releasing Tommy Wirkola’s Witch Hunters in a few weeks, and this red-band trailer sets up the creature gore audiences should expect. Check it out below:

Doesn’t Jeremy Renner have Avengers money now? Can’t he put a few million in a paper bag and just whisper, “Make this thing disappear?” I suppose releasing a movie in the wasteland that is late January essentially has the same effect.

As you can see, Renner and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia) play the fairy-tale children Hansel and Gretel, who almost ended up in a witch’s oven at a young age. Now grown, they exact revenge on all sorts of witches, leading to Matrix-inspired slow-mo carnage with a driving techno soundtrack. Wirkola turned a few heads by dropping killer Nazis into a conventional zombie movie with Dead Snow. His talents seem suited for Hansel, but the movie’s delays and the weak release date have us concerned. What do you think? Has the red-band clip, and all of the gore, sold you on the film? Or will you wait for Warm Bodies the following week to get your horror-comedy fix?
