Hello, Birdie!

Adam Shankman, as I've written many times before, can do whatever he wants in my eyes so long as he sticks to musicals. While i didn't bother with Bedtime Stories and will never watch A Walk to Remember again, I could watch Hairspray every day for the rest of my life, and still laugh at jokes from Prop 8: The Musical.

So it's very, very good news to hear that Shankman will be taking on Sony's planned remake of Bye, Bye Birdie, the venerable musical that's been kicking around both the screen and high school productions for the last 50 years. According to THR the project has been through a lot of incarnations before it landed at Shankman's feet, and at one point the character of Birdie-- a rock star heading off to serve in the Army-- was planned as a hip-hop star. No telling what angle Shankman will be taking, but hopefully it will involve lots and lots and lots of dancing. That's the former choreographer's best gift as a director, and when he uses it, it's a joy to watch.
