Highlander Casts Familiars

The fifth Highlander movie starts filming this October in Lithuania of all places (can't beat cheap labor), and they're finalizing their last few cast members. The news is rediculously good, and suddenly I'm excited.

Dubbed Highlander: The Source, the movie will be the first to focus on the Adrian Paul character, Duncan McLeod, from the critically acclaimed television series, instead of Connor McLeod, the character made famous by the Highlander films. So, it's AdrianPaul.net that has the movie's latest cast additions.

The reason I'm excited is that the cast additions include Jim Byrnes and Peter Wingfield. Byrnes and Wingfield were pivotal, and beloved characters on the original television show. Byrnes played Joe Dawson and Wingfield played Methos, the world's oldest living immortal. This is fantastic for two reasons. First, these are wonderful characters. The movie can only get better for having them in it. But second, maybe, just maybe this signifies that they are finally moving away from the failed, confusing, idiotic handling of the past few Highlander movies and into the direction of the incredible, introspective, dramatic, brilliant television series. That's what they should have done with Endgame when Duncan was first introduced into the films. Instead, they just plugged Duncan into the same confusing, senseless crap that the movies have always been.

Look, it's not good to be a Highlander fan. Since the series went off the air, it's been a world of constant pain and disappointment. Call mea fool, but for the first time in years this actually gives me a little hope.

Highlander: The Source is being directed by Brett Leonard and written by "Highlander: The Series" writer and co-creator David Abramowitz along with 'Hellboy' screenwriter Peter Briggs. It's rumored to be the first of three new Highlander films, but with the performance of the past few of these, it's hard to believe they have the financing to justify it without The Source first becoming some sort of huge, surprise box office success.
