From the moment the franchise began the marketing for The Hunger Games has been pretty spectacular, engaging fans on Facebook and fan sites, teasing out poster debuts and seconds-long trailer previews to the hungry masses, and leaving everyone wanting more. With the second film in the series Catching Fire coming later this year, Lionsgate is using the opportunity to get even more sophisticated, starting a marketing campaign for an even that only exists within the book.
Fans of Catching Fire are probably already anticipating Katniss and Peeta's victory tour, in which they travel across the entire nation of Panem to be greeted by the other districts-- the districts, that is, that sent the other competitors in The Hunger Games who died in the arena. It's a brutal trip, and made even more tricky thanks to the slow-burning rebellion that Katniss accidentally started back in the arena. The Victory Tour makes up a small part of the book, but Lionsgate is cannily cashing in on it, creating posters to advertise Katniss and Peeta's arrival, just as if they were about to show up in your own district. Take a look below at the poster debuted by Hitfix:
As Hitfix points out, the movie's Facebook page is also getting on board, promoting in a post today that "The Capitol proudly announces the victors of the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark, as they embark on this year’s Victory Tour! Stay tuned to The Capitol PN for updates…" They also included this closer look at Katniss and Peeta in their blinding white outfits:
The Facebook page Capitol PN is, as you might guess, another site run by the company that claims to speak for the totalitarian government that rules Katniss's homeland of Panem (known, once upon a time, as the United States). It's all very canny, and it's fun to see this kind of marketing for a relatively self-contained story, not just the sprawling comic book worlds of Marvel movies.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is coming to theaters November 22, and you can click here for everything else know about it so far.
