The Maintenance Man Is Here

I had a running argument with my roommates during my sophomore year of college. As a bunch of oversexed undergraduates, we would constantly bicker about whether any of us would stoop to hitting on girls that were engaged or married. This bitter squabble carried on for a few months until I ended up having to wingman for one of my friends with some dude’s wife. I resisted the urge to make a move (she was unattractive and obsessed with Warcraft), while my roommate ended up secretly dating someone’s fiancee. He lost bragging rights forever, and I still bring it up. Not very surprisingly, my roommate is not the only one of these morally questionable debauchees, and Screen Gems is ready to make a movie about one of them.

According to Variety, the urban-themed production studio has signed on to produce The Maintenance Man. The story is adapted from radio host Michael Baisden’s novel about a Juilliard graduate who decides to shelve his music dreams in favor of wooing married woman for some serious loot. Naturally, he soon has an attack of the conscience and feels he may not be on the most righteous of paths. I’m not a King James scholar, but I’m pretty sure doing the old in-out-in-out with another man’s woman violates at least 8 of the commandments (if you’re taking the Lord’s name in vain while doing it).

‘Rome’ helmer Carl Franklin will take up directing duties, and Dwayne Corbitt, Jesse Beaton, and Ralph Farquhar will produce. No one has been officially cast; however, the rumor mill is abuzz with talk that Alan Alda will play the virile recent graduate and Abigail Breslin will play his lead client. A juicy piece of gossip like that just has to be true.
