Paula Malcomson To Play Katniss' Mom in Gary Ross' The Hunger Games

There are many upcoming movies based on franchises with cult followings that I will admit to knowing very little about. One such project is The Hunger Games. Reading about Suzanne Collins' books in various articles, I've learned that the film is about a dystopian future where teenagers are pitted against each other in deadly combat. I've read about characters like Katniss and Peeta and other warriors, but I'll be perfectly frank: I have absolutely no idea what roles the adults play in this world.
THR reports that Paula Malcomson has been cast as Katniss and Prim's mother in director Gary Ross' adaptation of The Hunger Games. A single parent mourning the recent death of her husband, she lives in fear that her two daughters - who will be played by Jennifer Lawrence and Willow Shields - will be forced to fight in the titular event. The cast also includes Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Amandla Stenberg, Dayo Okeniyi, Leven Rambin and Jack Quaid.
Is that the extent of the mother's character arc? Is she merely in an opening scene and then disappears or is she seen weeping in a corner for a good chunk of the books? If she is a bigger character than this story seems to suggest, is Malcomson a good choice? Hunger Games fans: inform me!
