Yesterday, while writing up a story about Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton being cast in the comedy Two Night Stand, I quipped that this has been a strangely great week for projects with scripts that were featured on the Black List (the annual list of the most popular unproduced screenplays in Hollywood). But now it almost seems like a conspiracy. In addition to the three projects from earlier in the week, which also included , St. Vincent De Van Nuys and Pierre Pierre, tonight we learned that Kyle Newman is attached to direct Chewie and now Grace of Monaco has added another great actress to its cast.
According to Variety, Spanish actress Paz Vega has accepted a role in the upcoming biopic. Based on a true story, the movie is about famed actress Grace Kelly and her time as the princess of Monaco. While married to Prince Rainier III, she helped settle an escalating situation between France and the principality about her nation’s status as a tax haven. Nicole Kidman has already been cast as Kelly, who Hitchcock fans will recognize as the beauty from Rear Window, and Vega will be playing renowned opera singer Maria Callas. Olivier Dahan is directing the film, which is based on a script by Arash Amel (who is also serving as a producer on the movie). At the time of the conflict between Monaco and France, Callas was Aristotle Onassis’ girlfriend and he served as an advisor to Prince Rainier. This led to a close relationship between the singer and the princess.
Eva Mendes has actually been attached to a project about Maria Callas called Greek Fire for years now, but I doubt that Grace of Monaco will have any affect on that movie. Vega is currently in production on the Ray Loriga action film No Way Out, which co-stars Estella Warren and Hector Echavarria.
