Saturn Nominees Launched

Every year I report on the Saturn Awards and every year I assume that by the next year they’ll finally have faded away, been forgotten, or been abandoned and I won’t have to report on them again. Well, they’re still hanging around.

In fact, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror films has been hanging strong since 1972. I guess they aren’t going anywhere, no matter how disinterested some of you may be. That’s fine by me, since I think geeky Sci-Fi is pretty cool. And hey, they have Ray Bradbury! Each year the Satties (I just came up with that, like it?) award the best (at least in theory) genre films, both in movies and in television, of the year. This year’s list of nominees has been announced, so here’s their official press release detailing who may take home a Satty (Is it better with a “y”?).

The third installment in the popular Harry Potter film series, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” leads nominations in the 2005 31st Annual Saturn Awards announced by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

The popular wizard-in-training film conjured up nine nominations including Best Picture (Fantasy), Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron) and Best Writer (Steve Kloves). Daniel Radcliffe received a nomination for Best Performance By A Younger Actor.

Following closely behind were the films “Kill Bill: Vol. 2” and “Spider-Man 2” which received seven nominations each. “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”, “Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow”, and “Van Helsing” each received five nominations. “Collateral” and “House of Flying Daggers” snatched up four nominations each.

Warner Bros. & Sony Pictures lead the pack with a total of 14 nominations each. Paramount is represented with 11 nominations, and Miramax and Universal each received 10 nominations.

Television nominations had “Lost” leading the group with five nominations. Following were “The Librarian: Quest For the Spear”, “Smallville”, and “Stargate: SG-1” each with four nominations.
