What Daredevil’s Showrunner Thinks Of Ben Affleck’s Performance

The Netflix and Marvel team-up has gotten us incredibly excited with a whole slew of shows in the mix, but first to be produced is the Daredevil series. Marvel’s Daredevil has already begun filming, and the showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight has started to give us some clues into what to expect from the series. While answering fans questions via twitter, he also shed light on his opinion of the most recent Daredevil film, starring Ben Affleck. And while the movie had terrible reviews along with its release, DeKnight doesn’t think it’s Ben Affleck’s fault.

Steven S. DeKnight is a TV screenwriter, producer, and director, best known for the creation of the Starz series Spartacus. He’s also worked on popular shows such as Smallville, Buffy and Angel, and is no stranger to the world of comic books and heavy action. His previous work has more than earned him this valuable position, and we’re thrilled to see what he does with an awesome character like Matt Murdock. But aside from that, DeKnight recognizes talent, and found that Ben Affleck was not the problem in the 2003 Daredevil film. He tweeted:

DeKnight acknowledges that Affleck was all in, and is not to blame for the film’s lack of success. And that’s the truth, Affleck had a terrific performance, but there was no character development. He did what he could do with the role, but when the writing is poor, there’s not much more the actor can do to fix that.

Even Affleck has acknowledged his regret in taking the role of Daredevil back in 2003. Because of his new caped crusader role in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, his first comic book breakout role has been in the discussion. But Affleck shut down any debate by stating in an interview with Playlist:

"I understand I'm at a disadvantage with the internet. If I thought the result would be another 'Daredevil,' I'd be out there picketing myself. [laughs] Why would I make the movie if I didn't think it was going to be good and that I could be good in it?"

Affleck admits his mistake in taking the Daredevil role despite his own hesitation. And there’s no doubt that he is an incredible actor and director far beyond that role, so we totally forgive him.
