news:blended 1.3 - 1.9

Too lazy to read all the wonderful news our insightful crew scours the globe to bring you every day? Too outmoded to have an MP3 player for the podcast? Shame on you all! However, being the generous lot we are, welcome to news:blended, your weekly guide to the most interesting stories reported on Cinema Blend over the last seven days.

After a couple of light (lite?) weeks in terms of movie news due to Christmas and the New Year, we were back full blast this last week. Well, except for Saturday. We didn’t do anything on Saturday, but we did a lot the rest of the week. I guess that could depend on your definition of “a lot.” Mine is equal to the number of stories we did this last week. Except for Saturday.

SATURDAY

We didn’t do anything on Saturday. So I’m going to take this time to encourage you to watch Ghost Town on DVD. Ricky Gervais is awesome in this and it’s a real funny movie. It’s also a bit of a romantic comedy, so the gals will enjoy it as well. Josh hit the nail on the head in his review of the movie back in September. Do yourself a favor and rent this movie. Really.

SUNDAY

The one male in the world who thought Carrie Bradshaw kicked Tony Stark’s ass.

They can all go to hell, except cave 74.

Just when you thought everyone had released their Top 10 list for the year, Rafe Telsch busted his out. It had The Dark Knight at number 1, of course. It also had Sex and the City but not Iron Man. That means Rafe’s new name is Rachel. I think the first great movie of 2009 will be Year One, a caveman movie with Jack Black and Michael Cera. Not really. Actually, it will probably be awful, but the picture we have from the set is pretty funny. Not really.

MONDAY

Two of these three movies might actually get released!

Anything that will keep him from making Bedtime Stories 2

The WB is not just a crummy television network, it’s a pretty good movie factory. They are going to release movies this year like Harry Potter, Terminator 4, and (maybe) Watchmen. To get you excited about that, they gave us some pictures from each movie. Real pictures with actors and stuff. None of the pictures include John Travolta in a fat suit. He put one on for Hairspray and he might do it again if they make Hairspray 2. That would be too bad as he was the worst thing in the first movie.

TUESDAY

Women in spandex are supported. God bless America.

Do you care about what we don’t care about?

I can’t imagine why there aren’t more female superhero movies. I mean, if Supergirl and Electra proved anything; it’s that the best and most popular movies ever are about female superheroes. Bring on the return of Helen Slater! If they did bring back a Supergirl movie, it might become a movie we don’t care about. Like Tintin, 2012, and Prince of Persia. We don’t give a rat’s ass about any of these films.

WEDNESDAY

Taylor Lautner in Twilight

Where the Wild Things Are pic

When I went to the Twilight panel at Comic-Con, I was impressed by Taylor Lautner as one of the few actors on the panel who could speak a coherent sentence in the face of thousands of screaming girls. Now it looks like he’ll be around for another movie despite being more physically scrawny than the character he plays. Ain’t that always the way? Girls will be screaming a lot less for the new picture from Where the Wild Things Are. The movie didn’t seem like it would ever come out, but the picture seems to indicate that it might one day be released. Hopefully it won’t suck. .

THURSDAY

Have you heard about this whole Oscar thing?

People seem to like that Dark Knight movie.

With every critic and guild award or nomination, the Oscar race comes into sharper focus. That means that boring looking Brad Pitt movie is probably a lock for a nomination. Didn’t Atonement teach us anything? Apparently not. Fortunately, Katey Rich does Oscar Eye and keeps us up to speed on who will probably be nominated and might win. That way I don’t have to pay attention. I also won’t pay attention to the DGA awards. The guild is full of directors, so they nominated other directors who did the best directing. It’s very insular.

FRIDAY

Most fanboys were hoping for a XXX rating.

Most fanboys were hoping for a XXX rating here, too.

We commented on the whole ratings thing with two different Friday story. The latest Harry Potter movie will be rated PG. That means it can’t be as scary as people would like. Or maybe it is, who knows. We also learned that the Watchmen companion movie, The Black Freighter will be rated R. That means it’s pretty scary. Or maybe it isn’t, who knows. I don’t know much, apparently.

That’s all for another week of news blending. It’s like what you get at Jamba Juice, but cheaper and not quite as healthy. If you liked it or didn’t, leave some feedback.
