Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle In Time has been the subject of frenzied preparation over the course of the past couple of months. With the Selma director landing a $100+ million budget, and Oprah Winfrey in her corner, the big ticket Disney adaptation is off to a great start. Though should the latest news be accurate, that great start just received a hell of an upgrade as Reese Witherspoon & Mindy Kaling have been announced as joining the cast.
The Hollywood Reporter landed the good news, which sees Witherspoon and Kaling playing Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who, respectively. Completing the trio of witches known as ''Mrs. Ws,'' Mrs. Whatsit is described as a ''grandmotherly hobo,'' while Mrs. Who is an avid fan of literature, to the point of casually quoting its great works. Both characters are joined by Mrs. Which, who is being played by Oprah Winfrey, and has a way of speaking with extra letters in her sentences. Together, this powerful trio will try to aid young protagonist Margaret Murry and her compatriots, as they embark on a quest to find her missing father across dimensions of space and time.
Even just the potential of landing Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling for the cast of A Wrinkle In Time is the stuff that dreams are made of. Again, this is after Oprah Winfrey has already signed on, with Amy Adams and Kevin Hart being suggested as further potential cast-mates. Altogether, the confirmed and proposed cast for A Wrinkle In Time is star-studded enough that the iconic sci-fi novel from the pen of Madeline L'Engle seems to be getting its due with this adaptation. Not to mention, Witherspoon and Kaling's usual casting archetypes provide a firm balance when matched with the leadership skills / disconnection from humanity that Oprah's Mrs. Which is known to exhibit.
Witherspoon and Kaling's negotiations come along with the news that A Wrinkle In Time is looking to start production in Los Angeles at some point in November. Taking this news into consideration, we can then assume that Ava DuVernay's next project could be looking for a 2018 / 2019 release date, depending on when Disney feels like deploying this film. Also, depending on the level of special effects work the film will require, A Wrinkle In Time's production schedule could lead for an advantageous tentpole release in 2018's film market, at the earliest.
A Wrinkle In Time will start shooting in November, with no hypothetical release date in mind. As soon as any updates are available, we'll report back here as soon as possble.
