The Batman Character Some DC Fans Want Shia LaBeouf To Play
Superhero movie fan casting has been a common Internet activity among fans ever since the genre started getting popular early last decade. However, now that superhero movies are at the height of pop culture fame, you'd be hard pressed to find a major actor who hasn't been suggested for a character from the printed page, be it at Marvel, DC or elsewhere. Fury star Shia LaBeouf is the latest Hollywood star to be eyed, specifically to join the world of Batman, as some fans are keen on him playing Jason Todd, a.k.a. the Red Hood.
There's a new petition on Change.org for Shia LaBeouf to play Red Hood in the DC Extended Universe. The reasons listed for why he would be a good choice include him going the distance with his characters and how he's one of Hollywood's "most talented actors." The petition also pointed out that a lot of people were skeptical when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman, and now following Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, many consider him to be an amazing Caped Crusader. Currently the petition has only gathered a little over 400 supporters, and while these sort of fan demands never have any luck, it will be interesting to see how many people end up supporting LaBeouf as Red Hood.
Shia LaBeouf has gained notoriety in recent years for his personal life antics, but he has played some unique characters in movies. That "going the distance" point in the petition is especially apt, as Shia went so far as to pull out some of his teeth to get in character for Fury. LaBeouf already left his mark on blockbuster movies playing Sam Witwicky in the first three Transformers movies and Mutt in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but he hasn't appeared in a superhero movie yet. He was being considered to play Lieutenant GQ Edwards in Suicide Squad, but Warner Bros eventually decided they didn't want him in the movie following some creative changes, and the role went to Scott Eastwood instead.
Whether Warner Bros decides they want to meet with Shia LaBeouf or go with another talent, there's certainly room for Jason Todd to be introduced in the DCEU. A Robin memorial was on display in the Batcave during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while Warner Bros hasn't directly confirmed it yet, it's been strongly hinted that it was Jason who died, just like in the comics. Jason was later resurrected and adopted the Red Hood identity, fighting crime with using more aggressive tactics than when he served as the second Robin. There is a solo Batman movie on the way, but the only thing that's guaranteed from that story right now is the Dark Knight fighting Deathstroke. We'll have to keep waiting to see if the DCEU has plans for Red Hood.
