Wedding Crashers 2 Is Further Along Than We Thought

Wedding Crashers

It hasn't even been a week since we heard the first news that a sequel to Wedding Crashers might be a real thing that happens. Now it appears that thing may be happening sooner than we thought. When Isla Fisher mentioned that Vince Vaughn was planning to make a sequel it seemed like it could just be an idea without a plan. However, it turns out writers have been hired to pen the script.

Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are not household names, but with two other upcoming projects they appear to be a pair of writers that Hollywood has taken notice of. According to Entertainment Weekly, the duo was hired by New Line Cinema to write the script for Wedding Crashers 2. The two will see their first script on the big screen in a couple months when the Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy Fist Fight hits screens. They've also apparently written the story, though not the screenplay, for the Sony Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

The original Wedding Crashers was a smash hit back in 2005 that grossed nearly $300 million. The closest thing we got to a sequel was 2013's The Internship which was a similarly styled comedy that also co-starred Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. That comedy didn't do nearly as well.

Over 10 years is a long time to wait to make a sequel to a comedy. It's anybody's guess what the plot of the movie could be. The pair is probably a bit old to still be up to their old tricks. It would make for a depressing comedy if they were. However, interestingly, EW says it's "too early to tell" if any of the original cast. That includes Vince Vaughn and Isla Fisher. Since our initial news on the film involved one of those actors talking to the other, we would have said seeing them both again was a safe bet, but perhaps that's not the case. Maybe the plan is to make a new Wedding Crashers that takes the same basic premise of the original with new actors. It wouldn't be the first time that's been done, though usually those ideas are saved for direct-to-DVD sequels, not big screen follow-ups. We'd guess that the two leads will be back at the very least.

Wedding Crashers 2 may be just what the doctor ordered for both Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Neither actor has had a major hit in recent years. Vaughn is currently doing well in a supporting role in Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, but that follows several movies that have gone by largely unnoticed. Owen Wilson's last major film was the critically and commercially panned Zoolander 2. On the other hand, maybe falling back on a popular comedy isn't the best strategy here.
