How Important Leta Lestrange Will Be To The Fantastic Beasts Series, According To Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz

Despite the fact that Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was firmly set within the Harry Potter universe, it did quite a bit of work with regards to carving itself out as a brand new franchise. Part of this involved establishing some great new characters like Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander, while also paving the way for eventual newcomers like Zoë Kravitz' Leta Lestrange in the future sequels. Kravitz recently opened up about her involvement in the franchise and admitted that Leta's relationship with Newt would become a major plot thread going forward over the course of the series.

Zoë Kravitz's recent comments to Collider serve as a concrete confirmation that we have only just begun to scratch the surface in this corner of the Wizard World. Although she doesn't have a substantial role in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (in fact, she's little more than an Easter Egg) the character will have significant implications on the story moving forward. As an old love interest of Newt's, these two wizards have an intense and convoluted relationship that will almost certainly come into play even further as the Fantastic Beasts franchise expands. Discussing her future with the franchise, Kravitz said,

I think there's a few ahead. The relationship between Leta and Newt Scamander is a complex relationship, so I think there will be a lot of time for that to grow and develop, which will be fun.

Of course, it's also worth noting that the promise of more Leta Lestrange soon means that we will see certain aspects of the Harry Potter universe come into focus as well. As fans of the Wizard World already know, Leta is a relative of Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter), who plays an integral role as one of Voldemort's flunkies during the war in the 1990s. Whatever happens with Leta in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, it's sure to echo through the entire Lestrange clan.

Bellatrix Lestrange

Based upon everything that Zoë Kravitz has to say about her character in Fantastic Beasts, it's beginning to sound like Leta might not be quite as objectively evil as Bellatrix. Sure, it seems doubtful that Newt and Leta will eventually rekindle their love during the events of the upcoming sequel, but the "complex" nature of their relationship leaves it entirely likely that Newt may continue to see the good in her and help her. Whether or not he's successful in that venture remains to be seen.

CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant details on the development and production of the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel as more information becomes available. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2 is currently slated to begin production this summer and is on pace to hit theaters on November 16, 2018. Stay tuned for more details!
