Here’s What Happened On Hugh Jackman’s Last Day Playing Wolverine In Logan

Logan will be Hugh Jackman's last film playing Wolverine, a journey that has lasted 17 years. But what was Jackman's last day on the set of his last Wolverine movie like? I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Logan director James Mangold, who also worked with Jackman on The Wolverine, and I asked him how those final days went down. His answer is deeply emotional, as he told me:

I think it was a really moving moment. I think it was just one of these moments where you all realize he just did the last take of the last scene he'll ever do in this character. And, you know, there were hugs all around, and tears all around, and kind of a moment of just realizing... but we had many moments like that. Like, that scene didn't involve claws, so there was an earlier moment where you're going, 'I think this is the last time I'm wearing these suckers.' There's a lot of moments like that. But the reality was, when you're engaged trying to make the movie, you also are kind of -- sometimes those moments escape you, and you go, 'You know what? I think that was your last scene with Charles, and we didn't even realize it.' Because you're working on making the best movie you can.

I can't imagine what Hugh Jackman is going through. The man has lived with Logan, the character, for nearly two decades. He's the first person to bring the surly mutant hero ,to life on screen, and even though multiple versions of numerous X-Men have come and gone over the years, only Hugh Jackman has been lucky enough to play Wolverine. It almost makes you wonder if Fox will ever recast anyone else in the role once Jackman decides to hang up his claws.

Hugh Jackman Wolverine

Logan, which opens in March, marks the final time that Hugh Jackman will wear the adamantium claws. It pits Wolverine and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) against an ominous force that is stalking a young girl who is displaying mutant powers... something rare in this alternate universe. Here's James Mangold, talking about Hugh Jackman's final days as Wolverine:
