We've all been wondering exactly what's going on with the proper X-Men movies following the release of X-Men: Apocalypse. It seemed that nothing was really going on, but now it appears that may not be the case. Sophie Turner, who took over the role of Jean Gray in the most recent X-Men film says now that the latest season of Game of Thrones has wrapped filming, she's getting ready to film another mutant movie.
The X-Men franchise is in some sort of limbo right now. While we know the franchise is moving forward, it's not been exactly clear how that was happening. No direct sequel to X-Men__: Apocalypse has been announced and thus we did not expect to hear Sophie Turner tell HeyUGuys that she was going to be filming the next movie this year.
Having said that, we did know that at least one film in the franchise was planning to film this year. Josh Boone, writer and director of New Mutants, announced in December that his movie would start filming this May. It's possible that this is the movie that Sophie Turner is referring to. It had not been previously reported that she would have a role in the film, but it's certainly possible that plans were made for her to appear int order to keep continuity with the last movie. Although, considering the number of new characters that New Mutants will apparently introduce, it's hard to believe that Turner would have much more than a cameo if she did appear. It makes it hardly worth mentioning as part of her busy schedule.
The timing is hard to work out as well. Sophie Turner says that she's filming a pair of movies before she gets to the new X-Men movie. This would only give her three months to film both movies in order to make the May start time of New Mutants. While, depending on the type of movie and the type of role, she certainly could fit in a pair of movies between now and May, it would certainly be a tight fit.
Alternatively, we would need to consider the possibility that there's a direct follow-up to X-Men: Apocalypse set to start filming later in 2017. This seems unlikely, since no release date has been set for the next proper X-Men movie and there was no word that anybody was even working on a script, but it would seem that we need to at least consider the possibility that things have been moving forward, even if they haven't been noticed.
The real answer may be a sort of combination of the two ideas. Perhaps Sophie Turner will be in New Mutants, because, from the standpoint of the studio, that is the next movie in the proper X-Men franchise. What do you think the real answer is? Let us know in the comments.
