Another Ocean’s Actor Is Returning For Ocean’s Eight

Carl Reiner Saul Bloom

Until recently, the heist genre primarily seemed dominated almost exclusively by male crews, but that's about to change in a major way. The Ocean's franchise will soon transition from the capable hands of George Clooney's Danny Ocean to his sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock), and she will bring her own team of larcenous ladies into the equation for a daring score at the Met Gala in Ocean's Eight. That said, the upcoming thriller won't be composed entirely of newcomers, as we have officially learned that we can now expect to see Carl Reiner's Saul Bloom for a brief (yet exciting) cameo. Per Reiner:

And I got to work with my favorite actress, Sandra Bullock. I did one little scene with her, and it was such a pleasure. She's a work of nature.

Although the new female ensemble is the core focus of Gary Ross' upcoming Ocean's movie, Ocean's Eight will keep at least one foot in familiar territory with Carl Reiner's newly revealed role. The 95-year-old actor hasn't provided many details about how he explicitly factors into the plot of the film, but he has admitted that he will share a scene with Debbie Ocean at some point in the story. Reiner's Saul Bloom consistently served as the "old pro" of Danny Ocean's original crew in the Ocean's trilogy, so we're sure that he will have some sage advice for our new heroes. Who knows? Maybe he will even lend a helping hand when it comes to picking out a proper disguise and persona.

Bringing someone like Carl Reiner into Ocean's Eight will instantly help fans of the franchise understand where the all-female Ocean's movie stands in the greater continuity of the series. By including an integral crew member from the Steven Soderbergh trilogy, Ocean's Eight has firmly planted itself in a continuity that fans know and love. This isn't a reboot of a bygone universe; it's a spin-off that takes place within an existing world. We obviously won't see much of the iconic actor, as Reiner specifically made sure to tell Vanity Fair that he only has one scene in the upcoming Ocean's film, but his inclusion still goes a long way towards establishing a particular tone.

The inclusion of Saul Bloom in Ocean's Eight also raises very specific questions about the other cameos we could potentially see in the upcoming heist thriller. As of right now, Carl Reiner is one of the few members of the original Ocean's trilogy slated to return -- with Matt Damon also reportedly confirmed for a cameo. That said, George Clooney is a producer on the project, so it doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility that Danny Ocean may show up at some point (along with a few of his other closest allies) to lend a helping hand if necessary.

Carl Reiner is only the latest in a long line of exciting additions to the Ocean's Eight cast. In addition to the Ocean's Eleven veteran, the upcoming female-driven heist film has also tapped Hollywood heavy hitters like Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Rihanna -- among others. The film is going for the eclectic sensibility that made the original trilogy so watchable in the first place, the inclusion of a well-known personality like Saul Bloom only makes us more excited to see this project come together.

Ocean's Eight will debut in theaters next summer on June 8, 2018. For more information related to the rest of the theatrical debuts slated for 2017, make sure to take a glance at our comprehensive movie premiere guide!
