The New Ready Player One Trailer Introduces The Players, More 80s References

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg's upcoming Ready Player One gave us a look at the OASIS, now the second trailer is out and showing us even more of the pop culture-infused world of the new film. However, it also sets up a lot more of the story for those who might not be familiar with it. It looks amazing. It sounds better. Check out the new trailer below.

The first trailer was light on story, but gave us a basic setup of the world the movie takes place in, and gave us numerous easter eggs and references from the 1980s-focused world of the OASIS. Fans of the book Ready Player One needed no explanation, but anybody who was intrigued didn't necessarily understand what was going on. Here, we learn about the hunt for the egg that will take place inside the virtual world of the OASIS. We meed Wade Watts, but we also get a good look at Parzival, Watts' in-game alter ego. We also meet Art3mis, in both her human and OASIS avatar form. She's another of the major egg hunters (Gunters) in the story, who, as the trailer reveals, begins a relationship with Wade.

We see many of the film's characters for the first time in this trailer. Mark Rylance who plays the role of James Halliday. He's the Willy Wonka of the story, the man who created the virtual world of the OASIS, and then hides a prize inside it. We also see Ben Mendelsohn who plays the film's villain, Nolan Sorrento. He runs the part of the company called IOI which wants to take control of the OASIS.

While several references to pop culture that we saw in the SDCC teaser make their return, like the Iron Giant and the Back to the Future Delorean, we also get a lot of new material to look at. Some of is 80s inspired, like a boombox being lifted into a frame which a clear nod to Say Anything, and the Van Halen "Jump" soundtrack. We also get a lot of video game references, including a look at the Battletoads and some decidedly none 80s references, like Overwatch's Tracer, hanging out with Street Fighter's Chun Li

The first teaser got us excited for Ready Player One but now we're ready for it. While the story looks to clearly take some departures from the source material, the feeling the trailer gives off is right. It's exactly what we wanted and we can't wait to take our own steps into the OASIS this March. Get caught up with everything we know about the new film.
