New Solo: A Star Wars Story Video Includes A Cool New Hope Easter Egg

Han Solo met a tragic end in 2015's The Force Awakens, but in just a few weeks, we'll go on at least one more cinematic adventure with the character when Solo: A Star Wars Story turns back the clock to show how he became a notorious figure in the galaxy far, far away's criminal underworld. The movie essentially serves as the origin story for the Han we follow along with in the Original Trilogy, from how he met Chewbacca to how he obtained the Millennium Falcon. However, one of Solo's new TV spots also includes a fun "first" for Chewie harkening back to the first Star Wars movie: his first time playing a game of Dejarik, as seen below.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Dejarik game

Whether you're a casual or hardcore Star Wars fan, you'll remember during A New Hope that while passing the time on the way to Alderaan, R2-D2 and Chewbacca engaged in a friendly round of Dejarik, a.k.a. the game where hologram monsters beat each other up. When R2-D2 started to gain the upper hand, Chewbacca became angry, and after Han mentioned that Wookies are known to rip people's arms out of their sockets when they loose, C-3PO wisely suggested to his droid companion to let the Wookie win. Evidently Chewbacca's anger issues with Dejarik stem from the first time he played the game, as this new Solo: A Star Wars Story preview shows Tobias Beckett instructing the Wookie on strategy.

Chewbacca's a smart fuzzball, but when it comes to gaming, clearly he throws logic out the window if things aren't going his way, hence why he tries sweeping the monsters on the table away even though they're holograms. He has ten years in-between Solo: A Star Wars Story and A New Hope to become more skilled at Dejarik, but given his size, strength and ferocity, if ever he finds himself losing a game, he can always threaten to rid his opponent of their arms/appendages should the mood strike. Well, unless it's Han, in which case Chewie will begrudgingly admit defeat.

Directed by Ron Howard (who replaced Phil Lord and Chris Miller) and written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story's main cast includes Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrleson as Tobias Beckett, Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra, Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as L3-37 and Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos. The second of the standalone Star Wars movies has already broken pre-sales records, and it's projected to make around $170 million domestically on opening weekend.

Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts its way into theaters on May 25, so keep checking in with CinemaBlend for more news about the movie in these remaining weeks. Don't forget to also look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what other movies are being released this year.
