Knives Out Trailer: Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi Follow-Up Murder Mystery Has Chris Evans, Stacked Cast

What would you do if you’d just made a film as huge and monumental as Star Wars: The Last Jedi? If you’re the film’s director, Rian Johnson, you turn around and make a star studded murder mystery, of course! The mysterious, but talent packed Knives Out has been branded “a Rian Johnson whodunnit”, and we now have our first look at this brand new movie below.

Described by Johnson himself as “an original American whodunnit”, Knives Out is the director's first feature film after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which comes after a rather well acclaimed music video for LCD Soundsystem's track "Oh Baby." This film centers around a good old fashioned murder, with Daniel Craig and Lakeith Stanfield play two detectives who get wrapped up in said murder that binds the cast together. From the looks of what we’ve seen in the trailer, the road to solving one most heinous of criminal acts a person could commit is going to be a very twisty one indeed.

They aren’t the only folks brought together by the dismal fate that’s befallen Christopher Plummer’s character, as Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, and a heap of other co-stars are all suspects. As always, secrets will be revealed, the body count might grow just a little more, and there’s a good chance that the drawing room will see all the Knives Out survivors gathered for a very important conversation.

Going back to his retro-stylized roots, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out visually looks as if he’s gone back to the chops he honed with Brick and The Brothers Bloom. The style is very much in line with a murder mystery romp you’d see in the ‘70s.

Meanwhile, the dialogue is very much a more modern beast, and definitely noir tinged beyond belief. So it’s not as if modern audiences are going to be lost in the shuffle as the puzzle of Knives Out starts to come together.

However, the real cherry on top of the cake has to be a young star who’s poised to break out of the pack. Up and comer Chris Evans almost steals this trailer from the entire cast, as his smart assed member of the Knives Out’s central family isn’t afraid to take nothing seriously.

It’s a look that’s served him well in the past, with a career in comedies like The Perfect Score and Not Another Teen Movie showing off just how damned funny Chris Evans can be. It’s nice to see the actor returning to his kookier self, especially in his first post-Avengers role.

With a killer cast, an intriguing mystery, and gallows humor for days, what more does Knives Out have to offer? Oh, that’s right: an actual collection of strange and interesting knives, all arranged in a rather artistic pattern.

A lot of knives happen to be in this collection, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that one, or maybe several members of this rather combative family went Knives Out on the patriarch sitting above them all.

While he's been worked for an extended period of time in the realm of high concept blockbusters, Rian Johnson looks like he had a lot of fun bringing Knives Out to the world. As he will be returning to the Star Wars universe in the very near future, it's good to see Johnson rest up with some madcap mayhem and murder.

Knives Out gathers around its Thanksgiving table, as it releases on November 27. That being said, it's going to be a bit of a wait, so if you want to see what's on offer in the much closer future, head over to the 2019 release schedule for further info!
