The DC live-action universe has a rocky start, with movies like Justice League and Suicide Squad failing to impress critics and audiences alike. But Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman showed that the shared universe was capable of, marking the DCEU's first critical darling when it arrived in 2017. A sequel was quickly green lit, although Jenkins took her time without rushing into an early release date. Wonder Woman 1984 just got its first trailer, where and its title character was missing her signature sword and shield. And now Gal Gadot has explained their absence in 1984.

Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot teased the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 for days, before finally releasing it to the public, and doing some press about the highly anticipated DC blockbuster. That's where Gadot explained why her signature DC hero won't carry any weapons for her fourth appearance on the silver screen. As she put it,

Wonder Woman does not carry a weapon. We had an intention to let go of the sword, because there’s something very aggressive with a sword. If you have a sword, it means you need to use it. So we wanted to give that up. And we didn’t feel that the shield was necessary either. She’s a goddess, she can fight, she’s super strong, and she has the skills. So no, she has the gauntlets. She has the lasso. She has her tiara and that’s about it.

Well, that certainly clears things up. It looks like it was a conscious choice to leave Wonder Woman without her weapons in 1984. And as such, we should expect very different action when the sequel hits theaters in June.

With the upcoming sequel moving decades into the future, Diana Prince will have to adapt to a very different World of Man than the one she originally discovered in 1918. With Diana Prince not utilizing her weapons in Wonder Woman 1984, her action sequences should go down quite differently. The trailer for the sequel show her relying heavily on the Lasso of Truth, even using it to swing on lightning bolts. It looks like there will be plenty of thrilling action, and Diana will utilize her signature gear like the gauntlets and tiara.

Wonder Woman 1984 will further explore the past of Gal Gadot's signature DC hero, and see her miraculously reunited with Chris Pine's Steve Trevor... who hasn't aged a day. We'll also be introduced to Kristin Wiig's Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord.

All will be revealed when Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on June 5th, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2020 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
