Halloween Kills Director Explains Why The Third Movie With Jamie Lee Curtis Will Be Different

Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween Kills' trailer

It’s a good time to be a horror fan, with plenty of new additions coming to both theaters and streaming services. One of the most highly anticipated upcoming movies is David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills, which was delayed a full year as a result of the pandemic. That’ll be followed up by Halloween Ends, and the director recently explained why the threequel will be so different.

2018’s Halloween movie was a massive success, bringing back the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis to her signature role: Laurie Strode. Two sequels were quickly ordered, although it sounds like they’ll be very different projects. Halloween Kills is about mob violence, but producer Malek Akkad recently teased that the final installment will be “way more contained” of a story. Director David Gordon Green further elaborated, saying:

I get engaged by doing something different. If I was just going to be repetitive, I would hand the reins off to someone else. When you have that opportunity within an established franchise, it’s really fun to think about how you can show different tones and perspectives and evolve.

How delightfully cryptic. While being careful not to reveal any secrets from either Halloween Kills or Halloween Ends, it’s clear that the current trilogy is being crafted very methodically. We’ll just have to see what grisly twists and turns come our way when Haddonfield is back on the big screen.

David Gordon Green and Malek Akkad’s comments to Total Film should make sense to hardcore Halloween fans who have been patiently awaiting the release of Halloween Kills. Because while the 2018 sequel was entirely focused on Laurie’s trauma and how it affected her family, the sequel will follow as the denizens of Haddonfield arm up to form an angry mob and attempt to kill Michael Myers themselves. As for Halloween Ends, that remains a complete mystery.

If Halloween Ends is a more contained story, smart money says that many of the characters featured in Halloween Kills won’t make it out alive. David Gordon Green has assembled the Avengers of horror movies, with a number of returning actors from John Carpenter’s 1978 original reprising their roles alongside Jamie Lee Curtis. This includes Kyle Richards, Charles Cyphers, and Nancy Stephens. What’s more, we’ll get adult versions of Tommy Doyle and Lonnie Elam, played by Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Longstreet respectively.

While not much is known about the overall plans for the current Halloween trilogy, the cast and crew certainly seems thrilled about where the franchise is going. Jamie Lee Curtis also recently teased the events of Halloween Ends, saying she thinks that’ll be her final bow as Laurie Strode. It looks like the story will be emotionally satisfying, which certainly goes with what we were shown in the 2018 sequel.

Halloween Kills will arrive in theaters on October 15th, 2021. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
