Subscribe To Weekend Box Office - Shutter Island Doesn't Cop Out Updates
The final weekend of the February doldrums came and went, with the last two movies dumped into theaters making only mediocre splashes.

Critics and Kevin Smith fans alike had minimal praise for his new comedy Cop Out, but thanks to big names like Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, enough of an audience turned up to give the movie second place in the top ten with $18 million, the largest ever box office opening for a Smith project.

Of course, that's not such a huge accomplishment when you consider that his previous record was held by Jay and Silent Bob for a minimal $11 million.

Horror flick The Crazies came in a close third with $16 million, not bad for a movie made with no major names on a $20 million budget.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island held on to the number one spot for a second weekend, banking an additional $22 million for a total of $75 million domestic. Well on its way to the $100 million mark, the movie will be only the third Scorses movie to hit triple digits. The Aviator just broke in at $102 million back in 2004 and The Departed went all the way to $132 million back in 2006.

Meanwhile Avatar in its 11th weekend, continued to milk extra revenue out of the higher 3D ticket prices, crossing the $700 million mark. No actual budget information has ever been released on the film, but there's little doubt that it has made more profit than any other movie in history.
